Five Questions for MOTOR
Did you feel that? That’s your insides being torn apart by the kind of bass that normal humans aren’t supposed to experience, created by the notorious duo known as Motor – half American, half French, all Death Rave. And please don’t mistake them for being German. Motor’s US-half and friend of I Love Neon took some time out his busy tour and flight schedule to answer some questions for us. Read on – and then see you on Hallowe’en!
There was a quasi-punk/pop band in the 70s called the Motors who had one big hit called “Airport”. You spend the better part of your life traveling and in Airports. Tell us about your favourite Airport and why, and what are some things you either like to do or end up doing when stuck in an airport for several hours…
Schipol Airport in Amsterdam. The bright yellow gate signs are easy to ready when you’re hung-over. And I’m a sucker for dutch cheese, so I will gorge myself on aged gouda after a gig at the airport. I like the airport life in general, but it’s a bitch when you’re still tripping from the night before and haven’t slept.
The first priority of any self respecting air traveler is to get elite status with an airline, then have access to lounges on those long layovers. I often sleep in the lounge and even shower off the stink from the night before.
Motor is opening for the inimitable (autistic artist) Gary Numan on several dates of his ‘Pleasure Principle’ tour. The Pleasure Principle is a psychoanalytical term coined by Sigmund Freud, which states that all humans prefer pleasure over pain. Let’s test the theory: What one thing makes you most happy, and would you want to do only that forever?
I really enjoy sitting down at a piano and drinking wine. The more I drink, the more emotional the music is, and by the time I’ve finished the bottle, I’m useless. I get bored of any one activity after 1 hour. After that, it becomes a job and the pleasure is replaced by pain and agony. Sigmund Freud is full of shit.
Warp records founder and ‘Cabaret Voltaire’ front man Richard H Kirk will also be part of the ‘Pleasure Principle’ tour (in the UK). Cabaret Voltaire is also the name of the 1920s Swiss club where the Dada movement was founded. If Motor were to create a new form of art and expression, what would it be called and what would it represent?
Let’s call it MOTORRR. And it would represent art, which was mechanical and relentlessly unforgiving. Repeat patterns with human errors, the opposite of cold – perfect machine art.
What is your favourite horror film and why?
The Exorcist. The threat of death and impending doom is in every scene. The music perfectly suited the visuals. It’s one of those rare horror films that is truly scary.
In honour of your Halloween show in Montreal, please create a scary sentence with the following words: Metal, Motor, Autokill, Hyper, Machine, Death, Depeche, Mode, and Kanye West.
Autokill Kanye Kanye Death Kanye Autokill Motor Autokill
As told to Krista E, for I Love Neon & High Food.
